An educational bee trail for young and old

Embedded in the outdoor area of the Plattner Bienenhof, our bee educational trail leads through fragrant flower meadows.

Equally industrious and fascinating, the black and yellow creatures organise their daily routine in the beehive and, thanks to amazing teamwork, our healthy honey is produced. During the educational trail, you will literally gain an insight into the work of honey bees.

The 9 stations on the bee trail

How do bees see?

The sense of touch

Learn how the bee finds its way around in the proverbial “pitch-dark” hive.

The sense of smell

The bee’s sense of smell makes it possible to obtain pure honey from each type of flower. You will find out why at this station. Can you also smell the difference?

Can bees hear?

What does that have to do with the dance area in the beehive? Our educational trail will tell you.

Records from the bee world

Imagine that a 3 kg infant would weigh 1,500 kg after 6 days. Unimaginable for humans, but a fascinating reality in the world of bees. More about this at this station.

Bee poetry

Learn more about the importance of bees for different peoples of all eras.

The bee in the Bible

The last stop on our bee trail is the atmospheric little chapel of St. Ambrose. From the peaceful little hill surrounded by shady trees, you can enjoy beautiful views and learn more about the patron saint of beekeepers.

But we would like to tell you one thing right now: According to the ancient tradition of the Legenda Aurea, the bees fed little Ambrosius honey while he was sleeping in his cradle. Without hurting him, they flew away again. According to legend, they gave him the “honey-sweet language” of his later writings and hymns.
